TRANSCRIPT

RODOLFO AREVALO IS A NATIVE OF TEXAS, BUT HE HAS ROOTS IN EASTERN AND CENTRAL WASHINGTON. HIS MOTHER AND FATHER WERE MIGRANT WORKERS WHO SPENT TIME IN WALLA WALLA AND THE YAKIMA VALLEY.

AREVALO WENT ON TO BECOME PART OF THE FIRST GENERATION OF HIS FAMILY TO GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE. AND HE HASN’T LEFT CAMPUS. HE’S BEEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, MORE THAN HALF OF THAT IN THE CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY SYSTEM. FOR THE LAST SEVEN YEARS, HE’S BEEN THE PROVOST AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS PAN AMERICAN, HIS ALMA MATER. AREVALO SAYS THAT UNIVERSITY HAS FOCUSED ON PROVIDING SCHOOLING TO PEOPLE THAT HAVEN’T, TRADITIONALLY, HAD ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION.

AREVALO SAYS ONE OF HIS PRIORITIES IN CHENEY WILL BE TO FIND NEW SOURCES OF REVENUE, TO SUPPLEMENT THE UNIVERSITY’S FUNDING FROM OLYMPIA. HE SAYS THAT MEANS HE AND OTHER EASTERN SUPPORTERS WILL SPEND A LOT OF TIME FUNDRAISING.

GORDON BUDKE, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE, SAYS TRUSTEES WERE DRAWN TO AREVALO’S EXPERIENCE AND EXCITED ABOUT HOW HE MIGHT BRING MORE STUDENT AND FACULTY DIVERSITY TO EASTERN.

AREVALO REPLACES DR. BRIAN LEVIN-STANKEVICH, WHO’S BEEN THE INTERIM PRESIDENT SINCE JUNE, WHEN DR. STEPHEN JORDAN LEFT. HE’LL TAKE OVER ON APRIL FIRST.
