'Miss Misery'

Megan Sukys/Dave Beck
02/07/2006

Meet David Gould: abandoned by his girlfriend, pushing the deadline for his first book, tormented by writer's block, and obsessed with the impossibly sexy, overwhelmingly alive diaries young people keep online. Now meet David Gould online. Here, in his fictional diary, he's a downtown DJ and an inveterate night owl, drinking and charming countless girls until the sun comes up. But while his real life remains static, David's diary mysteriously begins updating itself. The reason? David Gould has a doppelganger, an obnoxious shadow set on claiming David's newly glamorous life as his own. Today, music critic and novelist Andy Greenwald joins Dave Beck with Miss Misery, his story of online journals and identity crisis in the hipster New York scene. Also today, Harry Smith in the Northwest and classical music reviews with Gavin Borchert.

Today's Featured Music Selection: Harry Smith Folk Music
The Anthology of American Folk Music is only one part of a vast body of work from polymath Harry Smith. The Northwest Film Forum presents a tribute to Harry Smith, this weekend, February 10th-12th. Throughout the hour, we listen to more songs that Chuck selected from the three CD reissue.

At 2:05pm - Harry Smith in the Northwest
Released in 1952, The Anthology of American Folk Music brought a new perspective on American music and culture. Chuck Pirtle, writer and contributor to the liner notes of the CD reissue of the Anthology, joins KUOW's Megan Sukys to discuss how Smith compiled the influential collection, place it in the context of his other work and play excerpts.
