TRANSCRIPT

JIMMY CARTER BREEZED IN WITH A SMILE TO THE U-W CAMPUS AND SPOKE ABOUT THE NEW MEDICAL SCHOOL BUILDING NAMED FOR HIS FRIEND, GLOBAL HEALTH ADVOCATE WILLIAM FOEGE [FAY-HEE]. SINCE LEAVING THE WHITE HOUSE IN 1981, CARTER HAS DEDICATED MUCH OF HIS CAREER TO FIGHTING POVERTY IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD. HE SAYS HE HOPES RESEARCH AT THE NEW U-W CENTER WILL HELP ALLEVIATE DISEASES LIKE MALARIA THAT ARE ENDEMIC IN THE WORLD’S POOREST COUNTRIES.

Carter: "The fact is that the biggest challenge is to take advantage of what we already know. Because what we're dealing with in the poorest countries are diseases that have already been eradicated here. That no longer exist among Americans. So that’s proof in itself that it can be done. And they’re devastating diseases."

CARTER SAYS BIOTECHNOLOGY WILL MAKE HEALTH CARE CHEAPER AND MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR PATIENTS AROUND THE WORLD AND HERE IN THE US.

WHEN ASKED, HE WAS HAPPY TO DIGRESS FROM THE SUBJECT OF GLOBAL HEALTH AND PUT IN HIS TWO CENTS ON THE IRAQ WAR.

Carter: "It was a completely unnecessary war. It was a completely unjust war. It was initiated on the basis of false pretenses, either deliberately or inadvertently misinterpreting the intelligence data that was available. What to do now is obviously a different proposition. We’re already there, we can’t just peremptorily withdraw. I think it would create an almost immediate civil war."

CARTER SAYS THE US SHOULD ENCOURAGE A STABLE GOVERNMENT RUN BY IRAQIS AND SHARE WAR PROFITS WITH ALLIES LIKE FRANCE AND RUSSIA. HE SAYS HE’D LIKE TO SEE MOST AMERICAN TROOPS GONE FROM IRAQ A YEAR FROM NOW. JENNY ASARNOW, KUOW NEWS.
