Chinese President Welcomed at Microsoft

International trade will once again be on the agenda as Chinese President Hu Jintao wraps up his tour of Washington State. Today, he will pay a visit to Boeing and speak to workers there. Yesterday, it was Microsoft's turn to have face time with the Chinese President. KUOW's Deborah Wang has this report.

TRANSCRIPT

PRESIDENT HU WAS THE GUEST OF HONOR AT AN EXCLUSIVE DINNER AT THE HOME OF BILL AND MELINDA GATES.

THE GUESTS INCLUDED FORMER GOVERNOR GARY LOCKE, STARBUCKS CHAIRMAN HOWARD SCHULTZ AND FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE HENRY KISSINGER.

GOVERNOR CHRIS GREGOIRE GAVE THE OFFICIAL TOAST.

GREGOIRE: "Mr. President you honor us with your presence. It is a symbol of friendship, and we know with that it will grow and remain strong forever. Welcome to Washington State."

PRESIDENT HU THANKED HIS HOSTS, AND NOTED THE LONG LIST OF WASHINGTON COMPANIES WHOSE PRODUCTS ARE HOUSEHOLD NAMES IN CHINA….AMONG THEM, BOEING, MICROSOFT, AND STARBUCKS.

IF I WERE NOT SERVING IN THIS OFFICE, HE JOKED, I WOULD CERTAINLY LIKE TO GO TO STARBUCKS AND SIT FOR A WHILE.

HU HAD SPENT THE AFTERNOON TALKING BUSINESS WITH MICROSOFT EXECUTIVES, BUT THERE WERE NO NEW DEALS SIGNED. HE TOURED THE COMPANY'S SO CALLED HOME OF THE FUTURE, AND TOLD BILL GATES THAT HE USES A MICROSOFT OPERATING SYSTEM. YOU ARE A FRIEND OF CHINA, HE SAID, SO I AM A FRIEND OF MICROSOFT.

HU WILL WRAP UP HIS TRIP TO WASHINGTON STATE WITH A VISIT TO BOEING'S EVERETT ASSEMBLY PLANT.
