Ballad of the New Tacoma

Megan Sukys/Dave Beck

There's some grit you just shouldn't clean. Tacoma Poet David Fewster and singer/songwriter Heidi Fosner share their personal vision of the city of Destiny from their new performance, "Ballad of the New Tacoma". Also, two software engineers reveal their secret piano lives.

At 2:07 p.m. - Playing for Love (archive from 6/28/06)
Chung Lee and Eric Juvet are Microsoft software engineers by day, world class pianists by night. Following their passion in music, they have traveled the world, participating in piano competitions, and garnering major honors for their endeavors. But for all of this time, skill, and acclaim, they prefer to retain "amateur" status. What keeps them from quitting their day jobs? How do they balance their intense work schedules with an equally intense rehearsal process? In an archive interview from June 2006, Chung Lee and Eric Juvet speak with Dave Beck and play live in our performance studio.

At 2:20 p.m. - Ballad of New Tacoma
There's some grit you just shouldn't clean. While Tacoma enjoys an artistic and economic renaissance, some residents lament the loss of identity. Poet David Fewster and singer/songwriter Heidi Fosner express a highly personal vision of the recent past, current present, and not-too-distant future of the city Neko Case calls "a dusty jewel" in their show, "Ballad of the New Tacoma". They join us with a different view of the gritty city of Destiny.
