Fast Girl Skates and The Seattle Tower's 'Cave'

Megan Sukys
02/11/2008

Few sports encourage you to hug your opponent right after you elbowed her in the face. Today, we visit Fast Girl Skates, where they try to bring caring service to a brutal sport. We also visit the "cave" of the historic Seattle Tower and get book reviews from Nancy Pearl.

At 2:08 p.m. – Poems for the Beloved
This week, many people will exchange gifts and declarations of devotion in honor of Valentine's Day. Those who are separated from their beloved must find some way to bridge the distance. Today, Peter Pereira and Eloise Klein Healy read poems that provide evidence of the imagination's capacity to reach the beloved, despite geography and even mortality.

Peter Pereira is a family practice physician and the author of three poetry collections, including What's Written on the Body (Copper Canyon Press, 2007). Eloise Klein Healy has published seven collections of poetry and is the co–founder of ECO–ARTS, an eco–tourism arts venture. Her most recent collection is The Islands Project: Poems for Sappho (Red Hen Press, 2007).

At 2:20 p.m. – Seattle Tower
For a city that started as a pioneer camp, Seattle has always had grand ambitions. You can find versions of Seattle's story and sense of destiny in modern and historic architecture around the city. Kelly Brost leads tours of distinctive buildings and homes for the Seattle Architecture Foundation. The Seattle Tower was built in 1929 at the height of the art deco movement, and its design tells the story of a city on the rise. Dave Beck speaks with Kelly Brost at the Seattle Tower at 1218 Third Avenue in downtown Seattle.

At 2:50 p.m. – Fast Girl Skates
Few sports encourage you to hug your opponent right after you elbowed her in the face. But in roller derby, that's just part of the game. Seattle's Rat City Rollergirls includes over eighty members from all over Puget Sound. And when the girls need new rollergear, they often turn to Jennifer Savaglio. As the co–owner of Fast Girl Skates, Jennifer tries to bring caring service to a brutal sport. Today, Jennifer tells us how she first witnessed this mix of compassion and agression her first time on the flat track.
