Anti-Seattle Billboards in Rossi Race

"Don't Let Seattle Steal This Election!" That's the tagline to 61 campaign billboards for Dino Rossi in Eastern Washington. Supporters of Governor Chris Gregoire are denouncing the billboards, and the group that paid for them. KUOW's Amy Radil reports.

TRANSCRIPT

THE BILLBOARDS PROMOTE "DINO ROSSI FOR GOVERNOR–GOP" BEFORE INSTRUCTING VIEWERS IN EASTERN WASHINGTON NOT TO LET SEATTLE STEAL THIS ELECTION. THEY WERE PAID FOR BY THE BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF WASHINGTON, A MAJOR ROSSI SUPPORTER. ASSOCIATION SPOKESWOMAN ERIN SHANNON SAYS HER GROUP DOESN'T HAVE ANY SPECIFIC CONCERNS ABOUT THE UPCOMING ELECTION, BUT WANTS TO RALLY EASTERN WASHINGTON VOTERS WITH MEMORIES OF WHAT SHE CALLS "KING COUNTY SHENANIGANS" IN 2004 WHEN GREGOIRE NARROWLY WON.

GREGOIRE SUPPORTERS RESPONDED BY CALLING THE B–I–A–W AN "EXTREMIST" GROUP THAT OPPOSES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS AND HOMEOWNER'S RIGHTS. SPOKANE–AREA DEMOCRATS COMPOSED AN OPEN LETTER READ BY OLYMPIA REPRESENTATIVE BRENDAN WILLIAMS:

WILLIAMS: "We are calling on Dino Rossi to denounce and reject BIAW's ads, and join our call for the billboards to come down. We may not agree with Mr. Rossi on every issue, but we hope we can at least agree that it's wrong to dredge up the divisions of our past in an election about our future."

IN A STATEMENT, ROSSI SAID HE DOESN'T AGREE WITH THE BILLBOARD MESSAGE, BUT HAS NO CONTROL OVER HOW INDEPENDENT GROUPS SPEND THEIR MONEY. HE SAYS GREGOIRE MADE THE SAME DISCLAIMER RECENTLY WHEN THE STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY RAN AN AD LINKING ROSSI TO THE T.V. MAFIA FAMILY, "THE SOPRANOS."
