Jeremy Scahill on Blackwater

This week the U.S. Justice Department announced manslaughter charges against five men who worked in Iraq as private guards for the security firm, Blackwater Worldwide. The men, all military veterans, face trial in the shooting deaths of unarmed Iraqi civilians in Baghdad's Nisoor Square last year. The guards say they were attacked by insurgents while responding to a car bombing. In this rebroadcast from June, journalist Jeremy Scahill recounts what happened in Nisoor Square and examines the consequences of America's dependence on private security contractors in the War on Terror. Jeremy Scahill has reported from Iraq, Yugoslavia and New Orleans for Democracy Now! and The Nation. His latest book is "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army." He spoke at Town Hall in Seattle on June 18, 2008.
