'I drank too much last night': Blake Bailey on John Cheever

Dominic Black

John Cheever used to be famous, just like John Updike. Updike still is, but the Pulitzer–winning Cheever has been almost forgotten. Even in Microsoft Word, Updike is recognized by spell–check, while Cheever gets a big red line under his name. Biographer Blake Bailey — whose previous book chronicled the life of Richard Yates — has set out to answer that question. His new book "Cheever — A Life" is compelling, tragic, funny and sets out to reinstate the reputation of one of America's great post war writers. Blake Bailey spoke to Dominic Black.
