Former US Poet Laureate Rita Dove

Steve Scher
05/13/2010 at 10:00 a.m.

Rita Dove was the first African American Poet Laureate when she took the job back in 1993. She is only the second African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Her most recent book of poems, "Sonata Mulattica," tells the story of a bi–racial violin prodigy in the 1800s. Why is this an important story to tell? Why tell it in poems? Poetry month is over, but the exploration of verse continues on "Weekday."
