Listener's Forum: Living Downtown

Urban density is all the rage these days. Environmentalists, city planners and politicians talk a lot about how inefficient suburbs are. They say we should live closer together in walkable neighborhoods with infrastructure and public transportation. What's it really like to live in a dense urban neighborhood? Can you raise a family while living in downtown Seattle? If you are living in Belltown or Pioneer Square or the International District, tell us what it's like to live downtown. Where do you shop for necessities? Where do your kids go to school?

Gary Johnson is the Center City coordinator for the City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development.

Petra Franklin lives at the top of Smith Tower with her two small children.

Annie Strain lives with her four children downtown. Before moving to Pioneer Square a year ago, Annie and her family lived for three years at First and Virginia, across the street from Pike Place Market.
