Wednesday night, the South Park Bridge closed shortly after 7 o'clock, ending its 79–year history. King County says the bridge is no longer safe and is working on finding money to pay for a replacement. Thousands of people gathered in South Park last night to say their farewell.

Various different local governments have pledged some money to help pay for a replacement. King County says it plans to apply for a federal grant to pay the rest of the price tag, later this summer. About 20,000 vehicles used the bridge every day.
