Andrew Walsh
07/29/2010 at 8:00 p.m.

The US military strategies in Afghanistan and Iraq are based on counterinsurgency, and few people understand those strategies better than David Kulcullen. He helped General David Petraeus write the US counterterrorism playbook. He served as Petraeus' senior advisor during the Iraq surge in 2007. He advised General Stanley McChrystal in Afghanistan. And he worked with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2008.

David Kilcullen visited the University of Washington on July 15, 2010, just a few weeks after General McChrystal replaced General Patraeus as top commander in Afghanistan. In his talk, Kilcullen discusses the future of US military in the Middle East and offers some history of counterinsurgency theories.

His talk was sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Seattle and the Institute for National Security Education and Research at the University of Washington.

David Kilcullen is author of "Counterinsurgency" and "The Accidental Guerrilla: Fighting Small Wars in the Midst of a Big One."
