Carol Yoon: 'Naming Nature'

Andrew Walsh

We usually leave it up to scientists to name and categorize plants and animals. They know where to put new species on their organizational charts of life. But biologist and journalist Carol Yoon discovered that culture plays just as large a role as science when it comes to describing the natural world. She says we shouldn't let the researchers have all the fun — or take all the credit. Finding the right words to describe flora and fauna brings us closer to them.

Carol Yoon is author of "Naming Nature: The Clash Between Instinct and Nature." She spoke at Town Hall Seattle on September 15, 2009. Her talk was presented as part of Seattle Science Lectures, along with Pacific Science Center and University Book Store.
