Deborah Fallows already spoke six languages when she moved to China with her husband. She had taken a few Mandarin classes, but was amazed at how little she understood once she was standing on the streets of Shanghai. Can learning the rules of grammar and pronunciation help understand a foreign culture? Deborah Fallows writes about the process of learning and living with the Chinese language in her new book "Dreaming in Chinese."

Deborah Fallows lived in Shanghai and Beijing and traveled throughout China for three years with her husband, writer James Fallows. She holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from Harvard University and speaks six languages. She worked as a senior research fellow for the Pew Internet Project. When in the US, she and her husband live in Washington, D.C.
