One of the biggest practical challenges to implementing the new health care law is a shortage of primary care physicians. Could nurses pick up the slack? Nurse practitioners often see the patient first. Sometime they diagnose and prescribe medication before a doctor even arrives. Can nurses fill the gap in primary care coverage? How are nurses affected by changes in health care? What is nursing like in Washington state? Three nursing professionals join us today to fill us in on life in the white shoes.


Marla Salmon is the Dean of Nursing at the University of Washington. She previously served as director of the Division of Nursing for the US Department of Health and Human Services. Salmon recently authored the book "Nurse: A World of Care."

Linda Tieman is the director of the Washington Center for Nursing.

Gladys Campbell is the CEO of Northwest Organization of Nurse Executives.
