Baking Democracy From Scratch In The Middle East

Popular uprisings are challenging authoritarian regimes across the Middle East. What challenges lie ahead for building new democracies in Egypt, Tunisia and other countries in the region?


Doug Saunders is a Canadian–British author and journalist. He is the author of the book "Arrival City: The Final Migration and Our Next World" (2010) and the London–based European bureau chief for The Globe and Mail. He was recently reporting from Tunisia.

Marina Ottaway works on issues of political transformation in the Middle East and directs the Middle East Program at the Carnegie endowment for international peace.

Dr. Reza Aslan is a writer and scholar of religions. His books include "No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam and How to Win a Cosmic War."
