The Growing Wealth Disparity

04/07/2011 at 8:00 p.m.

Robert Reich was Secretary of Labor under President Clinton. His economic knowledge is as in demand in the media as it is on Capitol Hill. TIME magazine named him one of the top 10 cabinet members of the 20th century. He now teaches public policy at the University of California, Berkeley.

His new book, "Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future," argues that wealth distribution in America is unbalanced. Until we shrink that inequality, Reich argues, our economic recovery will be anemic. That's because a healthy economy depends on a middle class with disposable income.

But while most commentators would suggest wealth redistribution is against the interests of the very rich, Reich argues that it benefits them. It's better to have a smaller share of a growing economy than a larger share of dying one, he says.

Robert Reich spoke at Town Hall Seattle on October 5, 2010.
