Canadian physician and author Dr. Gabor Mate left a comfortable family practice to relocate to one of Vancouver's grittiest neighborhoods: Downtown East Hastings. Now, he's the staff physician at the Portland Hotel. The hotel serves and houses people who suffer from mental illness, homelessness, drug addiction, HIV, or all four. What circumstances bring people to his door? Are their problems a matter of personal history, or neurological development? In a show from our archives, we'll ask Dr. Mate what treatments work. This show originally aired on January 14, 2010.

Gabor Mate, M.D., is the staff physician at the Portland Hotel in Vancouver, BC. He is an author and regular columnist for The Vancouver Sun and The National Globe and Mail. He co–authored "Hold On To Your Kids: Why Parents Need To Matter More Than Peers." His latest book is "In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction."
