Silas Potter Jailed In Seattle

Phyllis Fletcher

The man at the center of a financial scheme in Seattle Public Schools is back in town, in King County jail: Silas Potter. KUOW's Phyllis Fletcher reports.

The King County prosecutor charged Potter in October with stealing a quarter–million dollars from the school district.

Last year, Potter moved from Seattle to Florida after the Washington state auditor started to investigate a program Potter ran for the school district. Potter authorized $1.8 million in expenditures and contracts the auditor called "questionable."

The School Board fired the superintendent and her financial chief this year after The Seattle Times made the audit findings public. The Times also found Potter living in Florida. The County Prosecutor's Office interviewed him there this summer, and said he'd been cooperative.

But Potter didn't come to his arraignment last month. A judge issued a warrant. And hours later, Potter was arrested in Florida after he'd been pulled over for license plate tabs that were not properly displayed.

Potter is charged along with two accomplices. They've pleaded not guilty. Potter is the only one in jail. He could face up to 3 1/2 years.
