Hanukkah starts at sundown today. How did a minor Jewish holiday become Christmas–like in its celebration? We take a look at the religious origins of Hanukkah, and how the modern celebration and traditions came to be. Then, Stuart McLean, host of "The Vinyl Cafe," joins us to talk about storytelling, his characters Dave and Morley, and how cuddling up with a radio almost killed him.

Noam Pianko is associate professor in the Jackson School of International Studies and the Pruzan Chair of the Stroum Jewish Studies Program at the University of Washington.

Stuart Mclean is host of "The Vinyl Cafe," a storytelling program that airs Sundays at noon on KUOW.
