Wash. Redistricting Commission At Impasse Over Latino Population

A plan to redraw Washington's congressional districts would create a competitive seat in Northwest Washington. It would also anchor a new district in Olympia, and create the state's first majority minority district in the Seattle area. The proposal released yesterday dramatically reshapes the map on the western side of the state to make room for the new 10th Congressional District. That was allocated to the state after a decade of population growth.

The bipartisan commission is still mulling over the new draft congressional map. But when it comes to redrawing state legislative boundaries, the commission is at a complete impasse. That's for the state legislative boundaries. The issue is how to apportion the Latino population east of the cascades. The panel has a January 1 deadline for that. Jessica Robinson has more.
