Tracy Grammer: Remembering Dave Carter 10 Years Later

Dave Beck

After first meeting in Portland, Oregon in 1998, singer and multi–instrumentalist Tracy Grammer and songwriter Dave Carter found they had instant musical and personal chemistry. The duo quickly developed into one of the most popular and acclaimed acts in American folk music. Joan Baez became a friend and champion of Dave and Tracy. Baez performed and recorded Dave's songs, and invited the duo on tours with her.

After just four years together, this inspired partnership between Dave and Tracy came to a sudden end when Dave Carter died in his partner's arms after suffering a massive heart attack. He was just 49 years old. On the 10th anniversary of Dave Carter's death, Tracy Grammer has put together a collection of some of the lost recordings that she and Dave made together at their home in Portland. One of the tunes on this new collection, called "Little Blue Egg," is Dave Carter's song titled "Hard to Make It."

Tracy Grammer visited us at KUOW and performed her partner Dave's song live in our studios. She speaks with KUOW's Dave Beck.
