Seattle Teacher Charged With Assaulting Student

Ann Dornfeld

A Seattle high school teacher has been charged with assault for allegedly choking a student last April.

According to police reports, South Lake High teacher Andrew McCool was trying to give a lesson in April when he was interrupted by two students talking in the back of the room.

McCool reportedly asked the students to be quiet. When the two ignored him, McCool allegedly walked over to them, grabbed one of the students and choked him.

McCool was arrested. Seattle Public Schools put him on paid leave while the district investigates. But students have rallied to support him. They say his accuser is lying.

South Lake High is a small alternative school focused on students at risk of dropping out and kids who've been suspended or expelled from other schools.

The Seattle City Attorney's Office wouldn't comment on a pending case.

McCool could not immediately be reached for comment.

The charges are classified as domestic violence and child abuse. A trial date has not yet been set.
