Calmer winds have firefighters hoping they can make progress today in containing a wildfire in central Washington.

The Taylor Bridge Fire between Cle Elum and Ellensburg has been burning since Monday. It's destroyed about 70 homes and blackened more 40 square miles.

Nancy Jones is with the Cle Elum Ranger District. She's helping out at the fire's incident response center. She says the fire is 10 percent contained. But more winds and high temperatures today could cause the fire to keep spreading.

Jones says more fire fighters have arrived from out of state to help. Some 800 fire fighters are on the scene today.

Jones says at least 400 homes have been evacuated. That's forced some 900 people and hundreds of animals to seek shelter elsewhere.

The Governor has declared a state of emergency for the area. That allows for more resources to be allocated to the firefighting effort.

Jones has lived in the area 30 years. She says she can't remember a fire this devastating.
