The Nanny Economy

John Moe
01/22/2004 at 9:00 a.m.

What are the challenges that face families, working mothers, and professional child care providers?

In the play Living Out at the Seattle Repertory Theater, Ana, an illegal Salvadoran immigrant with children of her own, takes a job as a nanny to the newborn child of harried entertainment lawyer Nancy. Both Nancy and Ana are well-educated, both have husbands who do not understand why their wives feel the need to work, both want to be good parents and both women are less-than-honest with their employers in order to keep their jobs and move up. Is the nanny culture bringing women of different classes and cultures together?

Guests:
Sharon Ott, director of Living Out and former nanny employer
Judy Julin, NannyBroker
Andrea Martinez, professional nanny
Hilary Stern, Director of CASA Latina
