Gates Speaks at Artificial Intelligence Meeting

Ruby de Luna
08/08/2001

Hundreds of researchers have convened in Seattle for the past few days to share ideas on the latest developments in artificial intelligence. One of the highlights of the conference was a presentation by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, who talked about the field and its applications for the future. KUOW's Ruby de Luna reports.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, ONLY MAJOR BUSINESSES AND SCIENTISTS HAD ACCESS TO COMPUTERS AND SOFTWARE. TODAY COMPUTING HAS REACHED THE MASSES, CHANGING THE WAY WE COMMUNICATE AND CONDUCT COMMERCE. RESEARCHERS IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ARE NOW LOOKING TO THE NEXT LEVEL. TO GET A GLIMPSE, KEYNOTE SPEAKER BILL GATES TALKED ABOUT THE DIFFERENT PROJECTS THAT MICROSOFT IS WORKING ON. ONE OF THEM WOULD MAKE IT EASIER TO KEEP MINUTES OF MEETINGS… Some of this involves having a camera that makes digital recording of things that are going on, understands who’s speaking, ideally building a transcript through speech recognition, and letting anybody who wasn’t present do the kind of searches they might be interested in, whether it’s looking at the transcript or a sped-up video that fills them in on the parts that might be relevant to them. MICROSOFT IS ALSO DEVELOPING SOFTWARE THAT PRIORITIZES INCOMING EMAIL MESSAGES AND KEEPS TRACK OF YOUR SCHEDULE. SO IF YOU’RE AWAY, IT BOUNCES IMPORTANT MESSAGES TO YOUR CELLPHONE OR PAGER. OF COURSE, THE ROAD TO TECHNO-UTOPIA IS BUMPY AND IMPERFECT. TAKE THE CASE OF MICROSOFT’S EARLIER INTELLIGENT PROGRAM CALLED “THE OFFICE PAPER CLIP.” A DANCING PAPER CLIP POPS UP AND TAKES OVER WHEN IT SENSES THAT YOU’RE WRITING A LETTER. MICROSOFT PULLED THE PLUG ON THE PAPER CLIP AFTER PEOPLE COMPLAINED IT WAS TOO OBNOXIOUS. I’M RUBY DE LUNA, KUOW 94.9 PUBLIC RADIO.
