Seattle Residents React to U.S. Military Strikes

Sam Eaton
10/08/2001

As news of U.S. military strikes in Afghanistan spread Sunday, Seattle residents' reactions ranged from pride and support to condemnation and protest. KUOW’s Sam Eaton reports.

FOR SOME BASEBALL FANS FILTERING OUT OF SAFECO FIELD AFTER YESTERDAY’S MARINERS GAME, THE U-S ATTACKS IN AFGHANISTAN WERE A NO BRAINER. OTHERS SUPPORTED THE ACTIONS WITH APPREHENSION OVER HOW MUCH WOULD BE ACHIEVED. BUT FOR RON LEWIS THE U-S’S PREPARATION AND USE OF RESTRAINT GAINED HIS SUPPORT IN THE BOMBING CAMPAIGN. I think we're doing the right thing, I think the government’s really going through and handling it well, getting a consensus and support internationally and they’re not just retaliating without a plan. BUT WHERE BASEBALL FANS REACTIONS VARIED WIDELY, ACTIVISTS AT A PEACE PROTEST-STAGED UP THE STREET AT THE FEDERAL BUILDING-WERE RALLYING AROUND A UNIFIED OPPOSITION OF ANY U-S RETALIATION WITH BOMBS. DARREN CHAMBERLAIN, A TEACHER, SAYS SOLVING VIOLENCE WITH VIOLENCE DEFIES A BASIC LESSON TAUGHT IN SCHOOL. As a preschool teacher people would think it was ridiculous if I was to try to teach my 4 and 5 year olds to react in a similar way when they felt wronged, or even legitimately wronged. If I was to say go over there and respond violently people would be horrified. MANY PROTESTORS SUPPORT THE U-S FOOD DROPS IN AFGHANISTAN BUT QUESTION THE LOGIC IN DROPPING BOMBS FIRST. ONE OPINION MOST SEATTLE RESIDENTS DO APPEAR TO AGREE ON, IS THAT IT WILL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE THIS CONFLICT SEES ANY RESOLUTION. IN DOWNTOWN SEATTLE, I’M SAM EATON, KUOW, 94.9, PUBLIC RADIO.
