Seattle City Council Incumbents Lead Challengers

Sam Eaton
11/07/2001

In the Seattle City Council races all four incumbents are leading their challengers. KUOW’s Sam Eaton reports.

VOTERS HAVE SHOWN WIDE SUPPORT FOR THE FOUR INCUMBENT COUNCILMEMBERS, RICHARD CONLIN, JAN DRAGO, NICK LICATA AND RICHARD MCIVER. COUNCILMEMBER CONLIN ENJOYS A COMFORTABLE LEAD OVER HIS CHALLENGER, MICHAEL PRESTON. CONLIN SAYS WITH A NEW MAYOR AND TOUGH BUDGET CUTS AHEAD, HE’S NOT SURPRISED VOTERS CHOSE TO STICK WITH THE INCUMBENTS. I think one of the things they are saying is they want some stability on the council, that we’re showing some ability to work together to solve problems, to try and find ways in which we can work through differences, but also each one of us ran an individual campaign. CONLIN SAYS HIS PRIORITIES ARE TO CREATE A CLOSE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEXT MAYOR AND WORK TO MAKE SURE SOUND TRANSIT’S LIGHT RAIL LINE IS BUILT. THE CLOSEST CITY COUNCIL RACE WAS THAT BETWEEN INCUMBENT RICHARD MCIVER AND GRANT COGSWELL. COGSWELL CAMPAIGNED ON SCRAPPING LIGHT RAIL AND SHIFTING THE MONEY TOWARD A CITY MONORAIL SYSTEM. BUT IT WASN’T ENOUGH TO UPSET MCIVER, WHO CHAIRS THE COUNCIL’S TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE. THE TWO OTHER CITY COUNCIL INCUMBENTS, NICK LICATA AND JAN DRAGO, EASILY DEFEATED THEIR OPPONENTS.
