New Alcohol Restrictions in Pioneer Square

Ruby de Luna
08/20/2002

Starting this fall cheap beer and fortified wine will no longer be available in Pioneer Square. We get more from KUOW’s Ruby de Luna.

FOR MANY YEARS THE CITY HAS TRIED TO CLEAN UP PIONEER SQUARE, A FAVORITE AREA FOR CHRONIC INEBRIATES. IT TRIED A VOLUNTARY PROGRAM WHERE BUSINESSES PLEDGE NOT TO SELL CHEAP, FORTIFIED WINE AND BEER TO CHRONIC DRUNKS. BUT THAT DIDN’T WORK. SO NOW THE PROGRAM IS MANDATORY. CASEY JONES OF THE PIONEER SQUARE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION SAYS STOREOWNERS NOW HAVE MORE REASON TO FOLLOW THE NEW LAW… Their licenses are on the line, simply put. Next to jail, that’s the strongest kind of stick there could be. The Liquor Board can say, listen you continue to sell those products, you don’t deserve a license, period, the end. THE NEW ORDINANCE ALSO BANS ALL ALCOHOL SALES BETWEEN 6 AM AND 9 AM. CRITICS SAY THE LAW WILL ONLY MOVE THE PROBLEM TO OTHER NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE CHEAP LIQUOR ARE STILL BEING SOLD. THE CITY COUNCIL IS CONSIDERING SIMILAR RESTRICTIONS ON OTHER DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOODS SUCH AS BELLTOWN AND THE CHINATOWN INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT. I’M RUBY DE LUNA, KUOW 94.9 PUBLIC RADIO.
