Ft. Lewis: "We're Winning The War"
Sound: [bugle] AN ARMY BUGLER PLAYS TAPS AT 5:46 AM, MARKING THE EXACT MOMENT PACIFIC TIME A YEAR AGO WHEN THE FIRST HIJACKED PLANE HIT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. IN THE DAYS THAT FOLLOWED, SOLDIERS FROM THIS BIG ARMY POST DEPLOYED TO THE EAST COAST, EUROPE, AND AFGHANISTAN. FORT LEWIS'S COMMANDING GENERAL EDWARD SORIANO SAYS HIS PEOPLE AND THE COUNTRY ARE "WINNING THE WAR ON TERRORISM." Soriano: "Yes, our lives have changed and our perspectives have changed. But we have the freedom to gather as we are doing this morning. We are free to go to school. We are free to worship. We are free to enjoy what we have. We are free, and no one is going to take that freedom away." SORIANO SPOKE TO SEVERAL HUNDRED EARLY RISERS, MOSTLY TROOPS IN CAMOFLOUGE AND BLACK BERETS. HE SAYS FT. LEWIS PERSONNEL CONTINUE TO STAND VIGILANT AND PREPARE AND TRAIN FOR WAR. THE POSSIBILITY THAT COULD HAPPEN SOON IN IRAQ WENT UNSPOKEN. I'M TOM BANSE AT FORT LEWIS, WASHINGTON.
